This thesis rethinks the concept of soft power in a non-Western context using South Korea as a case study. As Korean culture continues to gain global appeal in what is known as the Korean Wave or Hallyu, the thesis analyzes how Korea, as a non-Western state, understands soft power by examining the political and academic discourses in Korea between 2012 and 2023. Guided by a five-pronged theoretical framework, the thesis compares the Korean understanding of soft power to that of Joseph Nye who coined the concept. While the Korean discourse tends to align itself with Western frameworks and Western-led global hierarchies, it exhibits a distinct understanding of soft power that is shaped by its own culture and historical experience.

تعيد الدراسة النظر في مفهوم القوة الناعمة في سياق غير غربي استنادا إلى حالة كوريا الجنوبية التي تشهد زيادة جاذبية ثقافتها والتفاعل معها حول العالم في ظل ما يعرف بالموجة الكورية. تبحث هذه الدراسة في كيفية تصور كوريا كدولة غير غربية لمفهوم القوة الناعمة من خلال تحليل الخطابين السياسي والأكاديمي الكوريين في الفترة بين 2012 و2023. وفقا لإطار نظري مكون من خمسة أبعاد، تقارن الدراسة لفهم الكوري للقوة الناعمة بفهم جوزيف ناي الذي صاغ هذا المفهوم. ففي حين أن الخطاب الكوري يميل للتحدث بلغة تتماشى مع المعايير الغربية ولا يبدى تحفظات ملحوظة على الهياكل الدولية التي يقودها الغرب، إلا أنه يفهم القوة الناعمة بشكل خاص متأثرا بثقافته وتجربته التاريخية.
