تحتل منطقة الخليج أهمية استراتيجية كبرى تتصل بالموقع الجغرافي القريب من أوروبا والاحتياطيات النفطية والتحكم بخطوط الملاحة الدولية، وينعكس تأثير النزاعات الداخلية فيها على المصالح الاستراتيجية للأطراف الدولية إذ تهدد الأمن الدولي. عملت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية على تعزيز القدرات الدفاعية الخاصة بدول الخليج بدلًا من خوض الحروب معهم، وذلك للحفاظ على الأمن القومي الأمريكي، ويرتبط التغير الملحوظ في السياسة الأمريكية بمحاولاتها عرقلة الاتجاه الخليجي للتعاون مع إيران على الصعيد العسكري وخاصًة بعد إدراكها بضرورة مواجهة مصدر التهديد ذاته في ظل تراجع الردع الأمريكي للتهديدات الإيرانية في المنطقة. يتصل جوهر المعضلة الأمنية في منطقة الخليج بتباين الرؤى بين الدول المطلة على ضفتي الخليج إذ تسعى دول الخليج إلى تعزيز أمنها عبر تعزيز التعاون الثنائي مع الولايات المتحدة لموازنة القوة الإيرانية، وذلك في ذات الوقت الذي تسعى فيه إيران إلى خروج القوات الأمريكية من المنطقة في إطار سعيها لأن تصبح فاعلًا أساسيًا في معادلة الأمن الوطني الخليجي.

The essence of the security dilemma in the Gulf region is related to the difference in visions between the countries bordering the two sides of the Gulf, as the Gulf countries seek to enhance their security by strengthening bilateral cooperation with the United States to balance Iranian power, at the same time that Iran seeks the withdrawal of American forces from the region as part of its efforts to To become a key player in the Gulf national security equation.
