مرت مدغشقر بعد الاستقلال بمرحلتين الاولى كانت النظام الابوى والمرحلة الثانية كان نظام تعددي متعدد الأحزاب. وتتكون السلطات الرسمية للدولة من الحكومة، والبرلمان (الجمعية الوطنية ومجلس الشيوخ)، وسلطة قضائية مستقلة ، يتم انتخاب الرئيس بأغلبية الأصوات من خلال نظام الجولتين، ويتم تعيين رئيس الوزراء من قبل الرئيس. وفي الماضي، شهدت مدغشقر أيضًا فترات من الحكم الماركسي، عندما أُعلنت البلاد جمهورية ماركسية في عهد الرئيس راتسيراكا.
After independence, Madagascar went through two stages, the first was a patriarchal system and the second was a multi-party pluralist system. The formal powers of the state consist of the government, parliament (National Assembly and Senate), and an independent judiciary. The president is elected by a majority of votes through a two-round system, and the prime minister is appointed by the president. In the past, Madagascar also experienced periods of Marxist rule, when the country was declared a Marxist republic under President Ratsiraka.
