The Thief and The Dogs (1961), a novel written in Arabic by Naguib Mafouz, was first translated into English by Adel Ata Elyas in 1979, and retranslated into English by Trevor Le Gassick and M.M. Badawi in 1984. One of the reasons behind choosing this novel specifically is that it is one of the most important literary works of Naguib Mahfouz in which he uses for the first time the stream of consciousness technique which is commonly used in western novels. Moreover, it has two different English translations. The first is a collaborative translation done by both a source language (SL) native speaker and a target language (TL) native speaker, while the other is a traditional translation rendered by a SL native speaker. Determining whether the collaboration between a SL native speaker and a TL native speaker leads to a more successful rendering of the novel makes the comparison between the two translations worthy of study. The other reason for choosing this novel is that it abounds in colloquial expressions whose translation into English represents a big challenge for a translator. Translating colloquial expressions is one of the most common problems of translating prose in general and novels in particular. The difficulty of translating colloquial expressions lies in the fact that they are closely related to their culture and often have no exact or direct equivalents in the target language. In other words, they usually include implied meanings which cannot be deduced from the denotative meaning of the individual words which constitute them. The present study is a comparative study which aims to show which translation manages to capture the meaning, tone and effect of the colloquial expressions in Mahfouz’s The Thief and the Dogs in light of Newmark’s procedures for translating culture-specific items.

كتب نجيب محفوظ رواية "اللص والكلاب" باللغة العربية عام 1961، وترجمها لأول مرة إلى الإنجليزية عادل عطا إلياس عام 1979، وأعاد ترجمتها إلى الإنجليزية كل من ترفور لوجاسيك ومحمد مصطفى بدوي عام 1984. يهدف هذا البحث إلى استكشاف مدى صلاحية التقنيات التي اتبعها ترفور لوجاسيك ومحمد مصطفى بدوي عند ترجمة العبارات العامية في رواية اللص والكلاب إلى الإنجليزية من ناحية، وتلك التي اتبعها عادل عطا إلياس من ناحية أخرى. وبعبارة أخرى تحاول هذه الدراسة أن توضح مدى نجاح تلك التقنيات في توصيل معنى النص الأصلي ونبرته وتأثيره إلى القارىء المستهدف. تهدف المقارنة أيضًا إلى تحديد ما إذا كانت الترجمة التشاركية، وخاصة تلك التى تضم مترجمين أحدهما ينتمى إلى ثقافة اللغة المصدر والآخر إلى ثقافة اللغة الهدف، أكثر نجاحًا من الترجمة الفردية التقليدية أم لا خاصة عند ترجمة العناصر الخاصة بالثقافة مثل العبارات العامية، وذلك في ضوء إجراءات نيومارك المتعلقة بترجمة العناصر الخاصة بالثقافة.
