This thesis aims to explore the dynamics of political secession and independence referenda, focusing on understanding the factors that influence the success or failure of secessionist movements. By examining the cases of Quebec and Catalonia, the study provides insights into how federal governments manage secessionist demands. It highlights the significance of historical context, political parties, and constitutional frameworks in shaping the outcomes of independence referenda in liberal democracies.
The thesis employs a qualitative methodology, incorporating two main approaches: political culture and political economy. It examines the impact of linguistic and religious differences on secessionist aspirations and analyzes economic disparities, resource distribution, and perceived economic injustices. The thesis is based on primary and secondary sources, including official documents, reports, and academic studies related to Quebec and Catalonia.
The findings reveal key factors that deepen our understanding of secessionist dynamics. Cultural identity, economic disparities, and historical legacies play a significant role in shaping these movements. The case studies demonstrate the diverse responses of federal governments, ranging from legal opposition to negotiation and accommodation, highlighting the complexities of managing independence referenda within democratic frameworks.
This thesis contributes to academic and practical discourse by emphasizing the value of inclusivity, negotiation, and cultural understanding in addressing secessionist demands. It advocates for federal governments to foster environments of trust and compromise while maintaining democratic principles, ultimately stressing the importance of equitable governance and minority identity recognition in ensuring political stability.

الهدف من البحث:يهدف هذا البحث إلى دراسة ديناميكيات الانفصال السياسي والاستفتاءات على الاستقلال، مع التركيز على فهم العوامل التي تؤثر على نجاح أو فشل الحركات الانفصالية. من خلال تحليل حالتي كيبك وكاتالونيا، يسعى البحث إلى تقديم رؤى حول كيفية إدارة الحكومات الفيدرالية لمطالب الانفصال، مع تسليط الضوء على دور السياق التاريخي، والأحزاب السياسية، والأطر الدستورية في تشكيل استفتاءات الاستقلال في الديمقراطيات الليبرالية.
المنهجية:يعتمد البحث على منهجية نوعية تجمع بين مدخلين رئيسيين: الثقافة السياسية والاقتصاد السياسي. يتم دراسة تأثير الفروقات اللغوية والدينية على تطلعات الحركات الانفصالية، بالإضافة إلى تحليل التفاوتات الاقتصادية وتوزيع الموارد والشعور بالاضطهاد الاقتصادي. يعتمد البحث على مصادر أولية وثانوية، تشمل الوثائق الرسمية والتقارير والدراسات الأكاديمية المتعلقة بكيبك وكاتالونيا.

النتائج:توصل البحث إلى مجموعة من النتائج التي تعمق الفهم لديناميكيات الانفصال السياسي. يبرز البحث دور الهوية الثقافية والتفاوتات الاقتصادية والإرث التاريخي في تشكيل الحركات الانفصالية. من خلال دراسة الحالات، يتضح أن استجابات الحكومات الفيدرالية تختلف بشكل كبير، بين المعارضة القانونية والتفاوض والتسويات. تعكس هذه النتائج تعقيد إدارة استفتاءات الاستقلال ضمن الأطر الديمقراطية الليبرالية.
