The main proposition of this thesis is that the study of critical and literary theory in Islam has to go beyond the modern frame and the focus on poetics and rhetorics solely. Since dialectic is part of critical and literary theory, studying the premodern Arab-Islamic dialectic requires engaging with logic and philosophy. Logic and philosophy in the later tradition found roots in multiple traditions such juridical dialectic. Mapping out the trajectory of dialectic in the domains of philosophy and jurisprudence, this dissertation examines selected treatises by Abū Naṣr al-Fārābī, Abū ʿAlī Ibn Sīnā, and Sayf al-Dīn al-Āmidī. Opting for the decolonial option of “epistemic insubordination” or “epistemic disobedience,” this work travels between Arab-Islamic philosophy and logic, philosophy of geometry, argumentation, Islamic legal theory, approaching them as works of premodern critical and literary theory. To undo the damage wrought by colonial modernity, it is imperative to unlearn ‘theory’ in its current form. It is equally important to recognize unequivocally that anthologies and guides to ‘theory’ underserve the rich intellectual tradition of the premodern Arab-Islamic civilization. This is part of a larger trend that marginalizes medieval disputation and argumentation theories in the body of contemporary theory.

الفرضية الرئيسية لهذه الأطروحة هي أن دراسة النظرية النقدية والأدبية في الإسلام يجب أن تتجاوز الإطار الحديث والتركيز الحصري على الشعرية والبلاغة. يُعد الجدل جزءًا من النظرية النقدية والأدبية، ولهذا تستدعي دراسة الجدل العربي-الإسلامي في الحقبة ما قبل الحديثة العودة إلى المنطق والفلسفة. تجذّر المنطق والفلسفة في التراث المتأخر في عدة أشكال، مثل الجدل الفقهي. تتناول هذه الأطروحة نصوص مختارة لأبي نصر الفارابي وأبي على بن سينا وسيف الدين الآمدي، متتبعة مسار الجدل في مجالات الفلسفة والفقه. باتباع الخيار الديكولونيالي المتمثل في "العصيان المعرفي" تسافر هذه الدراسة معرفيا بين الفلسفة والمنطق العربي-الإسلامي، وفلسفة الهندسة، والحجاج، وأصول الفقه الإسلامي، متناولةً إياها كأعمال تندرج ضمن النظرية النقدية والأدبية ما عصر ما قبل الحداثة الغربية.ولمعالجة الأضرار الناجمة عن الحداثة الاستعمارية الغربية، من الضروري تفكيك أو محو مفهوم "النظرية" بصيغتها التقليدية الحالية. ومن المهم أيضًا الاعتراف بأن كتب المختارات والأدلة الخاصة بـ"النظرية" لا تفي بحق التراث الفكري الغني للحضارة العربية-الإسلامية ما قبل القرن الخامس عشر. ويندرج هذا التهميش ضمن توجه أوسع يهمش نظريات الجدل والمناظرة في العصور الوسطى.
