This study investigates the intricate role of tribal affiliations in the Zambian press
during the 2016 presidential elections. It delves into the historical, political, and
economic contexts that influenced the media landscape in Zambia, focusing on the
era of President Edgar Lungu. The central problem examined is the press's
perpetuation of tribal sentiments, driven either by state-affiliated opposition or
foreign sponsorship. The study highlights how tribalism concentrated private or
foreign ownership and reliance on global information sources, impacted press
freedom and democratization efforts.
The research explores whether the press's historical tribal affiliations align with
liberal political and legal reforms or if they were manipulated to serve electoral
purposes. It examines the impact of ownership and policies on press freedom, the
limited effect of privatization on eradicating tribal biases, and journalists'
perceptions of their freedom relative to policy changes. Additionally, it probes the
relationship between political elites, parties, and press, and how journalists navigate
constraints through strategies like infotainment.
Guided by questions on tribal and ownership implications, this study employs a
descriptive analysis where the researcher applies qualitative and quantitative
methods to reach certain conclusions. It analyses significant events and legal
frameworks shaping tribal affiliations in the Zambian press. By probing themes such
as tribalism, nationalism, and economic variables, the research aims to provide a
comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing press affiliations. This
analysis is crucial, given Zambia's prominent role in African media policies and the
broader implications for regional press freedom and democratization.

تتناول هذه الدراسة الدور المعقد للانتماءات القبلية في الصحافة الزامبية خلال الانتخابات الرئاسية لعام 2016. وتغوص في السياقات التاريخية والسياسية والاقتصادية التي أثّرت على المشهد الإعلامي في زامبيا، مع التركيز على حقبة الرئيس إدغار لونغو. وتتمثل المشكلة المحورية التي تتناولها الدراسة في استمرار الصحافة في تعزيز المشاعر القبلية، سواء بدافع المعارضة التابعة للدولة أو بتمويل أجنبي. وتسلّط الدراسة الضوء على كيفية تأثير القبلية، من خلال تمركز الملكية الخاصة أو الأجنبية والاعتماد على مصادر معلومات عالمية، على حرية الصحافة وجهود التحول الديمقراطي.
وتستكشف الدراسة ما إذا كانت الانتماءات القبلية التاريخية للصحافة تتماشى مع الإصلاحات السياسية والقانونية الليبرالية، أم أنها استُغلت لخدمة أهداف انتخابية. وتشمل الفرضيات الرئيسية تأثير الملكية والسياسات على حرية الصحافة، والمحدودية النسبية لتأثير الخصخصة في القضاء على التحيزات القبلية، بالإضافة إلى تصورات الصحفيين عن حريتهم في ضوء التغيرات السياسية. كما تتناول الدراسة العلاقة بين النخب السياسية والأحزاب والصحافة، وكيف يتعامل الصحفيون مع القيود من خلال استراتيجيات مثل الإنفوتينمنت.
ومن خلال أسئلة تتعلق بتأثيرات القبلية والملكية، توظف هذه الدراسة منهجاً تاريخياً يجمع بين الأسلوب الكمي والنوعي. وتقوم بتحليل الأحداث الهامة والأطر القانونية التي شكّلت الانتماءات القبلية في الصحافة الزامبية. ومن خلال التطرق إلى موضوعات مثل القبلية، والقومية، والمتغيرات الاقتصادية، تهدف الدراسة إلى تقديم فهم شامل للعوامل المؤثرة في انتماءات الصحافة. وتكتسب هذه التحليلات أهمية خاصة نظراً للدور البارز الذي تلعبه زامبيا في سياسات الإعلام الإفريقية، وما يترتب على ذلك من آثار أوسع على حرية الصحافة في المنطقة.
