This study examines the professional and ideological factors influencing female opinion columnists in Egyptian daily newspapers, and investigates how these factors are reflected in their political, economic, and social discourse. The study is grounded in a scholarly perspective that affirms, —supported by prior research—, that the communicator represents the "main artery" in the communication process undertaken by the media. Despite the unified communicative role, the contexts and challenges faced by female journalists differ from those faced by their male counterparts, as female journalists in Arab societies encounter more complex circumstances that may affect their career paths. To construct its theoretical framework, the researcher relied on three main theoretical approaches: Maletzke’s Model, the socio-cultural characteristics model of journalists, and the Social Constructivism paradigm. Methodologically, it employs the media survey method and systematic comparison, utilizing three primary tools: content analysis, discourse analysis, and in-depth interviews. The analytical sample included all opinion articles published by female columnists in Al-Ahram, Al-Wafd, and Al-Masry Al-Youm newspapers during the period from January 1 to December 31, 2023, while the field sample consisted of in-depth interviews with 13 female opinion columnists in Egyptian newspapers. The findings revealed a clear gap between issue priorities in the published discourse and what was expressed by the columnists in interviews. Social issues dominated the published discourse (50.88%), followed by political issues (36.4%) and economic issues (10.2%). In contrast, field interviews indicated greater interest in economic issues (25.6%), cultural and educational issues (25.6%), and international conflicts (15.38%). This discrepancy reflects a qualitative difference between the public published agenda and the personal agendas of the columnists, which can be explained by the influence of professional orientation and editorial policies, while personal interests are shaped by experience and specialization. The study also found that foreign political issues (68.44%), especially the War on Gaza, overshadowed domestic political issues (30.52%), despite significant domestic events such as the presidential elections and the national dialogue. The researcher attributes this trend to the presence of an implicit "red line" limiting the discussion of domestic issues, with foreign issues serving as a "safe margin" that avoids conflict with editorial or regulatory policies, alongside the desire of the newspapers to adopt causes that enjoy broad national consensus. Results further indicated that some columnists went beyond the official stance of their institutions, as in the case of Al-Wafd writers who supported “President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi” in the 2023 presidential elections despite the party’s nomination of its own leader. This suggests that partisan loyalty was not the decisive factor, and that there was a degree of editorial independence or pragmatic and rhetorical considerations linked to political power dynamics. The study also revealed the clear impact of academic background and personal experience on shaping discourse, with some columnists drawing on their specializations to offer in-depth analyses—such as focusing on education, health, or international affairs in line with their academic backgrounds. Interviews highlighted a notable distribution of academic specializations, with a clear predominance of literary backgrounds (53.8%) compared to media-related specializations (33.4%) and scientific specializations (15.4%), and each academic background leaving its own imprint on style and analysis. Interviews also addressed the issue of the "women’s quota," which some described as an opportunity for professional empowerment, while others viewed it as a symbolic role, leading in some cases to contributions that were more akin to "venting" than to a fully developed opinion pieces. In light of both analytical and field results, the study concludes that personal and ideological factors—including academic formation, family upbringing, and political affiliation—exert greater influence on female opinion columnists than professional factors such as work environment, editorial policies, and the political system. Nevertheless, the columnists were able to develop strategies to adapt to or circumvent such professional influences by selecting topics and framing discourse in ways that aligned with their personal expertise and intellectual vision.
