Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty Of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department Of Operative Dentistry Summary: This study was designed to evaluate the bonding efficacy of different bonding systems (etch and rinse as well as self etching) to individual or combined tooth substratesA total of 120 extracted human teeth were usedThe labial surface of the teeth were divided into three thirds horizontally and vertically , so as to use the middle third for the preparation of a 2mm cylindrical cavityThis cavity was to provide enamel or dentin tooth substrates according to the depth of cutting performedAnother , cavity was done at the cervical area of the teeth in the case of enamel / dentin / cementum substratesGrinding was done parallel to the long axis of the teeth in order to expose four substrates : enamel , dentin , enamel / dentin and enamel / dentin / cementumThe thickness of the specimens containing dentin were 2 mm whereas those for enamel were 1mmThree commercially available bonding systems were used for bonding : three step etch and rinse (Scotchbond Multi - Purpose) , two step etch and rinse (Single Bond) and self etching one step (Adper Prompt - L - Pop) Resin composite was bonded to the cavities and cured according to the manufacturer's instructionsA specially fabricated rectangular steel lower jig having a depressed area with a central hollow cylinder was used for the fixation of the specimens in a Universal testing machine
