An essential perquisite for clear good vision is have a smooth corneal surface epithelium supporting an intact tear film . Physiologically , a natural turnover of corneal epithelial cells occurs in which superficial cells shed from the epithelial surface and replaced by those from underneath . In turn , basal epithelial cells migrate inward from the periphery , replenishing the population of the deeper coneal epithelial cells
