Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science- Department of Botany - Microbiology Summary: Eight Streptomyces isolates were screened from the scabbed lesion of potato tubers (Solanum tuberosumL.). The phenotypical and biochemical characterization indicated that isolates (1) and (2) were similar, isolates (3) and (7) were similar and isolates (5), (6) and (8) were similar. The latter isolates were found to be relatively similar in many aspects to S. scabies and differ from other scab producing Streptomyces spp. The molecular identification of isolates (5), (6) and (8) using 16S-23S ITS revealed region sequence of 404, 435 and 466 bp in length, respectively. High similarity was detected between isolates (5) and (6) with S. scabies while low similarity was detected between isolate (8) and S. scabies. Isolate (8) was found to be highly alkalophilic and tolerant to pH up to 11. The alignment in the gene Bank indicated that S. alkaliscabies is different in sequencing from all known scab causing Streptomyces species
