Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Analytical Chemistry Summary: An antihistamine is a pharmaceutical drug that inhibits the action of histamine by either blocking its attachment to histamine receptors,or inhibiting the enzymatic activity of histidine decarboxylase which catalyzes the transformation of histidine into histamine. Histamine produces increased vascular permeability, causing fluid to escape from capillaries into tissues, which leads to the classic symptoms of an allergic reaction. This thesis is concerned with the analysis of two antihistaminic drugs (namely chlorphenoxamine hydrochloride and chlorpheniramine maleate) in 3 pharmaceutical preparations utilizing a total of 13 different spectrophotometric methods. They are marketed in combination with other pharmaceutically active drugs which are mainly used for the treatment of common cold, congestion, runny nose and watery eyes. A major problem in pharmaceutical analysis is the simultaneous determination of the active ingredients of multi component mixtures in presence of other components in the formulation such as excipients and additives by rapid, accurate and reliable methods. The conventional methods of analysis involving extraction or prior separation are usually tedious and time and resources consuming
