Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Nursing Services Administration Summary: Back ground: maintaining a safe environment for employees{u2018} welfare is as important as any other aspect of competent health care. It depends mostly on the ability of hospital to manage health and safety system this may done through learning about causes of error and use this knowledge to design systems to take a preventive action. Therefore the aim of the study was to assess hospital practice to maintain nursing staff health and safety and suggesting a system for managing nursing staff health and safety. Setting: this study was conducted at specialized pediatric hospital Cairo University. Sample: four samples were used as the following Stratified random sample of (106) staff nurses from total (265)staff nurses, convenient sample of (21) head nurses, available document related to nursing staff health and safety management and (35) jury experts. Data were collected by using three tools: modified hospital safety and health management system self-administered questionnaire, Safety and health management auditing sheet and validity Sheet for the proposed system. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between staff nurses and head nurses perception regarding hospital safety and health management system questionnaire also it was found that total mean score regarding hospital safety and health management system questionnaire was very low and all dimension fall under low level category with high percentage .in relation to proposed system validation there was total agreement to the proposed system by jury experts. Conclusion: It was concluded that there is a visible weakness regarding health and safety management system (HSMS). Recommendation: implementing developed health and safety management system by hospitals, periodical monitoring for adherence to HSMS and further research should be done concentrated on safety culture assessment
