Objective: To compare, clinically and radiographically short dental implants placement in maxilla to short dental implants placement in mandible. Methods: Fifteen participants with 7-9 mm of bone height in the posterior maxilla (test group) and 15 participants with 8.5-10 mm of bone height in the posterior mandible (control group) were selected to receive 8 mm or 6.5 mm length short dental implants (OsteoCare{u2122} Implant system, London, UK). Implants were loaded 4 months (T2) after placement. Patients were evaluated 12 months after loading (T3). Outcome variables included: Implant stability measured by periotest®M, Implant failure rate, marginal bone level (MBL) and complications. Statistical analysis was performed using parametric tests. Results: in 30 subjects, 32 SHIs were evaluated one year after loading (T3). No patients drop out in both groups. Implant failure in maxilla was 13.3% while it was 0% in mandible. The difference showing no statistical significant (P=0.4828). The mean PTMVs were -1.23±0.31 of SHIs in maxilla, while the mean PTMVs were -2±0.23 of SHIs in mandible, the difference showing no statistical significant (P=0.0585). SHIs in maxilla lost -1.55±0.29 mm of peri-implant marginal bone and SHIs in mandible lost -1.10±0.12 mm of peri-implant marginal bone 1 year after loading, the difference between the two groups showing no statistical significance (difference =0.44 mm; 95% CI: 0.18 to 1.06; P=0.1549)
