Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacognosy Summary: Coccoloba peltata Schott is a sprawling, small, evergreen tree mainly native to Brazil. Biological study of the ethanolic extract and the fraction of the leaves involved both in-vitro assessment of the cytotoxic and anti-oxidant activities, and in-vivo anti-diabetic parameters of the leaves. The in-vitro activities were screened using colorimetric MTT and ABTs scavenging assays, respectively and the in-vivo anti-diabetic parameters including hypoglycemic activity, glucose tolerance test and STZ-induced diabetes mellitus. Five known compounds: phytosterols (Ý-sistosterol and Ý-sitosterol-3-O-Ý-glucoside), anthraquinones (1-methyl emodin and emodin) and triterpene (olean-12-en-2Ü,3Ý-diol) have been isolated from the chloroform fraction of the ethanolic extract, identified via physicochemical and spectroscopic analyses. Phytochemical investigation of the ethyl acetate fraction of the leaves of C. peltata resulted in isolation of the gallic acid and myricitrin. The total phenolic content of the leaves was 65.1 æg GAE/g extract and the total flavonoid content was 58.2 æg QE/g extract
