Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Genral Surgery Summary: Laparoscopic abdominal exploration (LE) is a technique that appears to have great potential for reducing the incidence of nontherapeutic laparotomy in this population.4-6 Laparoscopy may be particularly well suited to the evaluation of anterior abdominal stab wounds. In general, these injuries are inflicted with limited force and follow a localized trajectory of penetration. They are distinct from the diffuse assortment of injuries associated with blunt trauma and from the so-called blast effect that characterizes organ injury from gunshot wounds. Within the spectrum of abdominal trauma mechanisms, LE maybe most useful in evaluating anterior low velocity penetrating trauma wounds because one limitation of the technique appears to be difficulty with viewing of retroperitoneal structures
