Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases
A total number of 72 Persian cats were included in the present study; admitted to the clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University, and exposed to complete clinical examination, serum biochemistry, detection of KIM-1 levels in serum and urine, ultrasonography and urine analysis. In first group (47 cats) including 38 cats suffering from feline lower urinary tract disease, (7 non-obstructive and 31 obstructive FLUTD) and 9 apparently healthy normal cats. In FLUTD ultrasonography coupled with histopathology, traditional serum and urine analysis are considered a preliminary step for diagnosing level of kidney injury, However KIM-1 showed significant superiority in detecting level of kidney injury even in early stages compared with routine serum bio Test (creatinine and BUN). We can recommend kidney injury molecule 1 to be used as early diagnostic and prognostic test in suspected acute kidney injuries. In second group (14 cats) including 7 cats fed on dry food and 7 cats fed on fresh cooked food. Dry food feeding has detrimental effect on renal tissue and consequently on renal function on long run as cats are exposed to decrease in food moisture affecting directly on body hydration condition. Kidney injury molecule 1 showed high superiority in detecting renal damage when compared to markers of azotemia. While urine specific gravity had the ability to detect condition of dehydration in dry food feeding cats but still with little prognostic capability on future of renal tissue and level of renal tissue damage
