Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Periodontology Summary: Gingival recession is defined as the apical displacement of the gingival margin in relation to the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ). It has been associated with many factors, such as poor tooth brushing, abnormal frenum attachment, improper restoration, tooth malpositioning, aging, and thin gingival tissue. Gingival recession can cause root sensitivity, root caries, and impaired esthetics. In such condition, periodontal treatment is designed to stop the progression of recession and to restore a condition of health, function and esthetics through the use of clinically predictable procedures.Researchers have described attempts to treat recession-type defects through the use of various surgical techniques such as: autogenous free gingival grafts, rotational flaps, coronally advanced flaps, subepithelial connective tissue graft and their substitutes, biological mediators as well as guided tissue regeneration and combination of these techniques. These periodontal plastic surgical techniques are indicated for the treatment on Millar Class I and II gingival recession. The acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is an allograft material obtained from the human skin that is chemically processed to remove all epidermal and dermal cells while preserving the extracellular dermal matrix. It is used in soft tissue augmentation and for root coverage purposes around teeth and implants
