This work has been carried out to investigate Hyperlipidemia while mirrors the onset of abnormalities in lipid metabolism secondary to the manifestation and progression of the atherosclerotic disease in the patientIn addition to diet , use of medicinal plants as a pharmacologic modality in preventing alterations in lipid metabolism has received wide attention from several worksIn the present study , we have therefore investigated the effect of either 100 or and 200 mg / kg bwdoses of Zingiber Officinale and Ginkgo biloba extract on the levels of lipid parametersThis work was divided into 3 main experiments : 1) The effect of these herbs on normal rats for 8 weeks2) The protective effect of the test herbs against hyperlipidemia for 8 weeks3) The curative effect of the test herbs for 8 weeks , after induction of hyperlipidemiaThe data revealed that , there were increase in blood glucose , total lipids , total cholesterol , triglycerides , aminotransferase , aspartate aminotransferase , alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase level , while BlHb and HDL - C levels were decreased after the indication of hyperlipidemiaThe results of experiment 1 revealed no harmful effects of the test herbs on normal rats except in creatinine level in serum which significantly increased during the course of treatmentsExperiment 2 and 3 the two doses elicited both protective and curative effect of the Zingiber Officinale and Ginkgo biloba extract where marked improvements in the level of all the test parameters were indicatedIn histopathological examination , fatty degeneration was found to be significantly decreased in the hyperlipaemia plus the two doses of the test herbsThe results were compared with Atorvastatin , a standard orally effective hypolipidaemic drug
