Rotating machinery supported on hydrodynamic fluid film bearings are usually prone to very high vibration levels due to the oil whirl / oil whip instability phenomena. This often limits the use of such bearings - despite their high load carrying capacity and excellent damping characteristies - in some applications , or at least places nuwelcome restrictions on the operating speeds of the machinery
