Bibliography: pages 133-141. Water scarcity affects billions of people worldwide, driven by factors such aspopulation growth, urbanization, and climate change. As the demand forwater continues to rise, it is essential to adopt integrated water resourcemanagement strategies that prioritize sustainability and address thecompeting needs of agriculture, industry, and domestic use. Therefore,investigating or examining different water sources has become a criticalaspect in reducing water scarcity and shortage. This study has madesignificant contributions to understanding the hydrogeological characteristicsand sustainable development potential of the Eastern desert of Egypt,particularly in the Greater Cairo area. This study focused on identifying andanalyzing springs along the eastern Nile Valley, examining their geologicaland hydrogeochemical properties, and assessing their potential forsustainable urban and agricultural development. This study revealed that theappearance of springs in the region is closely related to the complexgeological structure, including faults, fractures, and karst features. Remotesensing techniques were employed to extract lineaments, with dominanttrends identified as WNW-ESE and NW-SE. These structural features play a crucial role in groundwater movement and spring formation.Hydrogeochemical analysis of water samples from the springs showed varying compositions, with most samples exhibiting sodium chloride orcalcium sulphate water types. This study also employed isotope techniquesto understand the genesis and origin of the spring water, revealing mixedsources including deep aquifers, modern precipitation, and irrigation canals.Water quality assessments indicated that while the spring water is generallyunsuitable for drinking, most samples are appropriate for irrigation purposes.However, careful management is required, as some springs have limitations for agricultural and animal use. This thesis highlights the importance of integrating various scientific disciplines, including geology, hydrogeology, remote sensing, and geochemistry, to develop a comprehensiveunderstanding of the region's water resources. This interdisciplinaryapproach is crucial for sustainable development planning in arid and semiaridregions like the Eastern desert of Egypt. In conclusion, this studyprovides valuable insights into the complex hydrogeological system of theGreater Cairo area and offers a foundation for future research anddevelopment initiatives. The findings underscore the need for carefulmanagement of water resources, particularly considering ongoingurbanization and climate change challenges.
