This thesis examines the complex challenges of translating the language of the wretched and the marginalized in Khairy Shalaby's Wikalat Atiya, with a focus on Farouk Abdel Wahab’s English translation, The Lodging House. Drawing upon an integrated theoretical framework that includes Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1995) translation strategies, Lawrence Venuti’s (1995) concepts of domestication and foreignization, and Mohamed Enani’s (2020) stylistic translation principles, the study investigates the strategies employed to render the linguistic hybridity, socio-cultural idioms, existential metaphors, and discursive nuances of the original text. It also analyzes the role of paratextual elements—such as titles, blurbs, and glossaries—in shaping the reception and interpretation of the translated work. Through critical analysis of extracts that include significant translation problems, this thesis explores the translator’s approach in navigating Egyptian vernacular Arabic, multilevel linguistic registers, gendered language, and political critique. The study concludes by assessing the overall fidelity of the translation to Shalaby’s authorial voice and its effectiveness in introducing the culturally embedded world of Egypt’s lower class to an Anglophone readership. It confirms that the translator's approach preserves a purposeful sense of foreignness, avoiding excessive domestication of the cultural Other. This respect for the distinctiveness of marginalized voices allows English-speaking readers to engage with the unfamiliar linguistic and social elements that characterize Wikalat Atiya. تتناول هذه الرسالة التحديات المعقدة التي تواجه ترجمة لغة البؤساء والمهمشين في رواية "وكالة عطية" لخيري شلبي، من خلال تحليل الترجمة الإنجليزية التي قام بها فاروق عبد الوهاب تحت عنوان The Lodging Houseوتعتمد الدراسة على إطار نظري متكامل يشمل نموذج الترجمة لفيناي ودربلنيه، ومفاهيم فينوتي حول التقريب والتغريب، ومبادئ محمد عناني في ترجمة الأسلوب الأدبي. وتُركّز الدراسة على استراتيجيات المترجم في نقل الهجين اللغوي، والتعابير الثقافية، والاستعارات الوجودية، واللغة الخطابية للنص الأصلي. كما تستعرض الدور الذي تلعبه العناصر المصاحبة للنص (الباراتكست) – مثل العناوين، والتقديمات، والقوائم التوضيحية – في تشكيل تجربة القارئ الأجنبي. ومن خلال تحليل نقدي لمقتطفات نصية تحتوي على إشكاليات في الترجمة، تستكشف الرسالة منهجية المترجم في التعامل مع العامية المصرية، وتعدد مستويات اللغة، واللغة المتحيزة جندريًا، والنقد السياسي. وتخلص الدراسة إلى تقييم مدى وفاء الترجمة لصوت المؤلف الأصلي، ومدى فعاليتها في تقديم عالم المهمشين المصريين المتجذر ثقافيًا إلى القارئ الناطق بالإنجليزية. وتؤكد الدراسة أن نهج المترجم هو الحفاظ على درجة معقولة ومثمرة من التغريب ترفض التدجين المفرط لثقافة الآخر، ويتيح هذا الاحترام لأصوات المهمشين للقارئ باللغة الإنجليزية أن يتفاعل مع الأنسجة اللغوية والاجتماعية الغير مألوفة التي تميز رواية "وكالة عطية". specialized by Mahmoud Atef Elsayed ; Supervision Prof. Loubna Abdel Tawab Youssef.
