In the age of the Anthropocene, capitalism, imperialism, and climate change, horticultural issues of gardening and greening become pressing matters. This dissertation aims to conduct a comparative study of the literary representations of gardens as counter-archival spaces in three contemporary novels, mainly Diane Wilson’s The Seed Keeper (2021), Elif Shafak’s The Island of Missing Trees (2021), and Francesca Momplaisir’s The Garden of Broken Things (2022). Utilizing a multidisciplinary comparative approach, the dissertation draws on theories of the archive in relation to feminist, spatial, and environmental theories to explore how the garden represents a decolonial, political space, intrinsically intertwined with memory, history, identity, and power structures.
