This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a high-fiber diet (soybean hulls) compared to a high-starch diet, supplemented with prebiotics, probiotics, and 1% acetic acid, on broiler chicken performance, carcass characteristics, meat yield, gut microbial load, intestinal histology, and immunity. It also sought to determine the effectiveness of these supplements in reducing salmonella enteritidis colonization in the cecum. Intensified poultry production has led to increased susceptibility of broiler chickens to enteric pathogens, particularly salmonella enterica, posing significant risks to animal health and food safety. Nutritional strategies, including diet modification and nutrient supplementation, have emerged as crucial interventions to mitigate pathogen colonization while improving growth performance. This study evaluates the effects of prebiotics, probiotics, and organic acids on broiler chicken performance and salmonella enteritidis colonization in the cecum under two diets: a high-starch diet and a high-fiber diet. This study investigated the use of prebiotic, probiotic, and organic acid supplements with either a high-fiber diet using soybean hulls or a high-starch diet to evaluate the effect of these supplements. The study combined the results of three related experiments to provide a comprehensive understanding of microbial modification and nutritional enhancement in broiler chickens. In the microbiology- focused experiments, two-day-old broiler chicks were exposed to salmonella enteritidis and fed high-starch diets supplemented with prebiotics, probiotics, or organic acids. The results indicated that the addition of these supplements significantly reduced cecal colonization compared to the control group. Probiotics and organic acids were particularly effective in suppressing pathogen load, likely through competitive exclusion, and in enhancing intestinal barrier function. Prebiotics, particularly oligosaccharides, showed a moderate decrease in intestinal bacterial colonization, suggesting that selective stimulation of beneficial microbes indirectly inhibits pathogen proliferation. Importantly, these microbial interventions positively impacted growth performance, feed conversion ratio, and nutrient utilization, with organic acids showing particularly significant improvement, likely due to enhanced digestive enzyme activity and improved intestinal structure. The integration of microbiology and nutritional findings reveals a nuanced interplay between diet composition, microbial additives, and pathogen control. While starch-rich diets supplemented with probiotics or organic acids improved growth performance more effectively, high-fiber diets provided a complementary approach that enhanced intestinal health and pathogen resistance. This study underscores the importance of tailored nutritional strategies in broiler production, indicating that the effectiveness of feed additives is diet-dependent and that combining these strategies can improve both food safety and production efficiency. Overall, these results provide strong evidence that the addition of targeted nutritional supplements, whether in high-starch or high-fiber diets, can reduce colonization of the cecum by salmonella enteritidis while supporting broiler growth.
