  <abstract>Multicast is one of the most efficient ways to distribute data to multiple users. There are different types of multicast such as IP multicast, overlay multicast and Application Layer Multicast (ALM). In this thesis, we focus on Application Layer Multicast ALM where the multicast functionality is implemented at the end user. Different designs and types of ALM protocols are described followed by a comparison between two of the existing protocols which are NICE[3] and scribe -7</abstract>
