This thesis proposes two novel optimization approaches for achieving the optimal design of 1D photonic crystals. The rst approach is based on minimax criterion where nominal values of designable parameters are varied to best satisfy design specications. The second approach is based on design centering criterion, in which the objective is to maximize the probability of satisfying design specications. Two practical examples are given to demonstrate exibility and eciency of the approaches
