In this work the reaction of O-phenylenediamine (1) with diethylmalonate (2) in an oil bath at 120 C gave ethyl 2- (1H-benzo [d] imidazol-2-yl) acetate (3). Compound 3 was used in many acyclic and heterocyclic reactions. The latter products underwent a series of heterocyclization reactions to yield pyrazole, thiophene, pyridine and coumarin derivatives. The antitumor evaluations of the newly synthesized products against three cancer cell lines were measured
