The basic goal of therapy is to achieve a steady state blood or tissue level that is effective and non toxic for an extended period of time Most conventional drug products , such as tablets and capsules , are formulated to release the active drug immediately after administration to obtain rapid and complete drug absorption It is for this reason a great interest has been centered on the idea of replacing daily administration of a drug with delivery systems that release a constant effective dose to target tissue via a controlled release mechanism
