Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is one of the important causes of chronic diarrhea that shows an increasing incidence in the world especially in the middle east. Cell cycle progression is facilitated by CDKs that are activated by cyclins, including cyclin D1. Evidence of the involvement of cyclin gene alterations and overexpression in human cancer is growing. Aim of Work: This work aimed to examine immunohistochemical (I.H.C.) expression of cyclin D1 in inflammatory bowel disease and its correlation with the age, sex, disease activity, dysplasia and clinical presentation of the disease as we try to find a relation between the cyclin D1 expression on one hand with the disease activity and dysplasia in the other hand. Methods: This study consisted of 40 cases of IBD; 35 cases were ulcerative colitis and 5 cases were crohn{u2019}s disease retrieved as routinely processed paraffin blocks taken from the department of pathology, Kasr Elainy hospital in addition to some private labs. For all specimens, the clinical data were available on the computer files including age and sex of the patients as well as their clinical presentation. Microscopic examination of the H and E stained slides was done to assess the degree of disease activity (and dysplasia if present) for each slide. The activity of IBD was assessed depending on degree of inflammation, percentage of cryptitis, erosions and ulcerations. I.H.C. reactions were carried out by using cyclin D1 monoclonal antibody. Immunohistochemical expression of cyclin D1 was estimated by evaluating the intensity of brown nuclear staining of intestinal epithelial cells
