The interaction between Hg and Se is one of the best known examples of biological antagonism. According to the present data, the protective role of selenium on mercury toxicity of the pituitary gland was documented structurally, histochemically and immunohistochemically. The biochemical results suggested that apoptosis and autophagy would be one of the important mechanisms of mercury toxicity and one of the roles in reducing its toxicity by selenium by reducing these mechanisms. Therefore, it is recommended to use selenium to protect mercury exposed individuals from its toxic adverse effects
