Investigated the vitreous of postmortem eyes using a fluorescein staining technique, they found a premacular liquefied space, which they referred to as the posterior precortical vitreous pocket. The vitreous cortex appeared as a collagen sheet separated from the gel in the macula. Thus, the premacular vitreous cortex appeared to be spared from the direct traction exerted by the vitreous gel. These anatomic characteristics may explain the unsolved mechanism of vitreoretinal interface diseases. Swept-source Optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), which became available in 2012, visualized the entire precortical pocket, which has a connecting channel to Cloquets canal. SS-OCT showed that the precortical pocket develops during early childhood
