Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.)-Cairo University, 2024. Summary: Background: Sexuality is fundamental for the maintenance of health and wellbeing. Various contraceptive methods used by women during their reproductive period have been associated with changes in sexual function. In this context, we will assess the impact of two commonly used contraceptives on female sexual function. Objectives: To compare the prevalence of sexual dysfunction among females using combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and those using plain intrauterine devices (IUDs). Methods: A Comparative cross-sectional study carried on 130 female participants (65 COCs users and 65 plain IUDs users) in child bearing period attending kasr alainy hospital. Data were collected during consultation using the Arabic version of female sexual function index (FSFI), after exclusion of depression using the patient health questionnaire (PHQ 2& PHQ9). Results: there was a statistically significant difference between COCs users and plain IUD users in prevalence of sexual dysfunction (P<0.05), with a higher prevalence of sexual dysfunction among COCs users compared to plain IUD users. There was statistically significant difference between both female groups regarding all domains (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain) and total score of FSFI (P<0.001), with total and mean score of sexual function domains among COCPs users showed highly significant decrease in comparison with plain IUD users. Conclusion: sexual dysfunction is more prevalent among female using combined oral contraceptives(COCs) in comparison to those using plain intrauterine devices (IUDs).
