Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Periodontology Summary: It was advocated that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a role in the pathogenesis of OLP. Due to the fact that there was increase in oxidative stress along with the decrease antioxidant defense system in patients with OLP. Moreover, vitamin E worked as an antioxidant that had the ability to scavenge free radicals, that{u2019}s why it was advocated as a treatment for OLP. The current study aimed to compare the effect of adjunctive use of vitamin E as an antioxidant agent with topical corticosteroids on the level of total oxidative capacity in the saliva of patients with OLP before and after treatment versus patients treated with topical corticosteroids only. The study sample consisted of 22 patients that suffers from symptomatic OLP, and they were divided into 2 groups, each group composed of 22 patients. The first group (A) received topical corticosteroids in the form of kenacort ointment 2 times a day and a placebo pill once in the morning, while the second group (B) received topical corticosteroids in the form of kenacort ointment 2 times a day in addition to vitamin E tablet once per day. The secondary outcomes were the evaluation clinically using the VAS for pain scoring before treatment and each week after treatment till the 2th week. In addition to, the clinical scores for OLP lesions also before and after treatment with 2 weeks follow up. Salivary total oxidative capacity was evaluated using enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA) before and after treatment
