Bibliography: pages 89-109.
Background: Satisfaction has emerged as an important patient–focused indicator of the
quality of patient care in the health sector including physical therapy. Patient centered
health care is now the dominant paradigm in health service delivery. Children with Down
syndrome (DS) often face physical challenges including mastering of motor movements.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess the level of parents’ satisfaction about the
quality of physical therapy services provided for their DS children and to compare the
factor of the MedRisk Instrument that has the greatest impact on overall satisfaction of
parents in both the outpatient’s clinics of the governmental hospitals, and the outpatient’s
clinic of the academic institution
Methods: A cross sectional, non-experimental, exploratory study included 50 DS children
(trisomy 21) from both sexes (26 boys and 24 girls) with age ranged from five months to
five years randomly selected in a stratified sampling procedure based on level of motor
functioning using gross motor function measurement GMFM-88. The children were
assigned into two groups group A refers to Level 3 according to GMFM-88 (n=21) Partial
complete 10% - to less than 45%; and group B refers to Level 4 according to GMFM-88
(n=29) Partial complete 45% to less than 100 %. Results: There was a significant
difference in mean values of GMFM-88 (P=0.01), between group A and group B. The
mean values of MedRisk Parent Satisfaction Questionnaire (MRPSQ) in group A and
group B were 71.81 ±16.91 and 76.55±8.26, respectively. There was significant difference
in mean values of MRPSQ (P=0.01), between group A and group B. There were no
significant differences in mean values of MRPSQ among places of survey within group A
(P=0.326) and group B (P=0.426). There was positive correlation between total score of
MRPSQ and GMFM-88 scores.
Conclusion: Parents were satisfied with the physical therapy care provided to their DS
children, and they consider the patient-physical therapist relationship important. There was
no difference in overall satisfaction of parents in the outpatient’s clinics of both the
governmental hospitals, and the academic institution and this study revealed that factor-1
with its all 6 items had significant effect in parents’ satisfaction for services of physical
therapy applied for children with DS, in contrast factor-2 and factor-3 had no
significant effect this study
