The neurohormone melatonin exerts its diverse physiological actions mainly through activation of two G - protein - coupled receptors MT₁ and MT₂ . Extensive SAR - studies have been carried out revealing both the methoxy group in position 5 , and the ethylacetamide side chain in position 3 to be essential for high binding to both melatonin receptors
