ملاحظة الأطروحة: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Anatomy ملخص: Objectives:Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease associated with hyperglycemia and oxidative stress which cause several tissue damage in many organs including the heart.Diabetic cardiomyopathy, as an independent cardiac complication, is characterized by myocardial dysfunction in the absence of coronary artery disease, hypertension or valvular heart disease. The present study aimed to investigate the cardiac histopathological changes of streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetes in adult male albino rats and the possible protective role of citrate. Methods: This study was carried out on 45 male albino rats which were divided into group I ( Non-diabetic control group) fifteen rats received no medication ,group II (Diabetic group) fifteen rats received single intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg bw STZ , group III (Prophylactic group) Ten diabetic rats received 5 og/kg sodium citrate every other day by intraperitoneal injections immediately after induction of diabetes and group IVc (Therapeutic group) Five diabetic rats received 5 og/kg sodium citrate every other day by intraperitoneal injections three weeks after induction of diabetes then were sacrificed 5 weeks later.Blood samples were collected from the tail vein for determination of blood glucose level. Then the rats were sacrificed and the heart was carefully removed. Parts of the hearts obtained were prepared and used to determine glutathione (GSH) and malondialdhyde (MDA) levels. The remaining parts of hearts were prepared for light microscopic and histomorphometric studies
