تمثل الأسواق التاريخية النواة العمرانية والقاعدة الاقتصادية لنشأة المدينة والمركز الاجتماعي والثقافي بها. إلا أنه نتيجة لتطور المدن السريع وظهور اتجاهات التنمية الحديثة تعرضت الأسواق التاريخية في كثير من المدن ومنها القاهرة، للتدهور والإهمال الذي طالها. يقوم البحث بإلقاء الضوء على هذه الأسواق وعرض مجموعة من النماذج والأنماط المختلفة للأسواق التاريخية داخل مصر وخارجها، ويتعرض لكيفية الحفاظ عليها من خلال الحفاظ المستدام الذي يربط بين المفاهيم الأساسية لكلٍ من الحفاظ وأهداف التنمية المستدامة. كما يتناول البحث دراسة مقارنة لمجموعة من التجارب المصرية والعالمية في الحفاظ على الأسواق التاريخية ومعرفة مدى تحقق الحفاظ المستدام بها، مع عمل دراسة ميدانية لسوق الخيامية في القاهرة كنموذج للأسواق التاريخية في مصر.

Historical markets represent city centers in general, as well as representing its economic base, besides its social and cultural center. However, due to the rapid development of cities and emergence of modern development trends; Historical markets have been subjected to deterioration and negligence , which has affected most of them negatively. The research highlights these markets and presents a group of different models and patterns of historical markets inside and outside Egypt. The study also suggests how to preserve historical markets through sustainable preservation that integrates the basic concepts of both preservation and sustainable development goals . The research presents a comparative study for a group of Egyptian and international experiences in preserving historical markets and investigating the extent to which sustainable preservation has been achieved, then a field study for El- Khayamiya market in Cairo was conducted as a model for historical markets in Egypt.
