Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the neonatal period inspite of extensive use of antimicrobial therapy . Sepsis related mortality and mortality rates are high among preterm infants especially in the smallest neonates . The increased risk of severe neonatal infections in the extremely preterm infant is thought to be attributable to immature defense mechanisms in combination with the use of invasive treatment techniques

Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the neonatal period inspite of extensive use of antimicrobial therapy . Sepsis related mortality and mortality rates are high among preterm infants especially in the smallest neonates . The increased risk of severe neonatal infections in the extremely preterm infant is thought to be attributable to immature defense mechanisms in combination with the use of invasive treatment techniques
