Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electronics and Communication Summary: IPv6 neighbor discovery (ND) based on RFC4861 is not designed for lossy wireless links. We provide an implementation and thorough performance evaluation of the RFC 6775 optimized neighbor discovery (ND) protocol. We investigate and analyze the basic RFC 4861 ND, developed for general networks running IPv6. We explain why such a basic ND protocol is incompetent and sometimes unpractical for 6LoWPANs due to its heavy use of multicast transmission, and being not originally designed for lossy wireless links (e.g. IEEE 802.15.4 links). Our results show that the optimized ND protocol reduces the number of the exchanged radio messages in the network by 70% compared to RFC 486-based ND. Besides, nodes multicast around 30% to 70% less ND control messages
