| 520 | _aThis study reports the feasibility and performance of thermally activated building systems with and without Phase Change Materials for the hot and dry climate zone of North Africa. Using a validated simulation model, four system configurations are examined for different melting temperatures and thicknesses of the Bio-PCMs. The four PCM-TABS systems are also compared to two reference systems with an active ceiling or floor. The configurations were assessed thermally by the PMVand PCH beside that, the energy saving and the energy cost were considered. Also, other experimental tests were performed on two cuboids to test the performance of the radiant floor with and without PCM. The results show that the use of PCMs is feasible for hot and dry climates, with reductions in energy consumption and running energy costs of up to 18.46 and 19.8 %, respectively, achieved when PCMs are incorporated into the radiant ceiling while having a melting temperature of 22 °C and thickness of 6 cm, and those savings increase when using larger volumes of PCMs with melting temperatures closer to the setpoint temperature. This comes with a slight reduction in the PPD from nearly 100 % in the reference systems to no less than 95.5%. In contrast, the total costs of the energy and the PCM together increased with the increase of the PCM’s thickness as the maximum total cost saving was 9% achieved when PCMs have a melting temperature of 22°C and thickness of 1 cm. Also, the numerical results proved that the PCM able to reduce temperature fluctuation by up to 35% compared to the cases without PCM. The best integration scheme to simultaneously decrease the mean PPD and increase the PCH is a radiant ceiling with a PCM floor for PCM melting temperature and thickness of 24°C and 5 cm. The experimental results showed that the PCM could save up to 84.56 % of the chilled water energy. | ||
