520			_aThis thesis analyzes the stylistic features of Wilson’s The Odyssey and Atwood’s The Penelopiad to show how language is used in both texts to simultaneously engage with and divert from Homer's Odyssey to mark and subvert gender and class bias. It argues that the way Wilson and Atwood handled The Odyssey is shaped by a cultural context with a high degree of awareness of feminist issues in literary works. This was reflected in their linguistic and stylistic choices which are the tools they employed to target incidents of marginalization and oppression and open new spaces of expression for the victims or subalterns. The main findings of the thesis are: first, translation and parody are used by Wilson and Atwood as spaces for feminist resistance of marginalization in Homer’ s Odyssey. Second, there is a process of cultural positioning that allows for such resistance. It is Eliot’s theory of tradition. A writer can achieve contemporaneity by simultaneously engaging with the past and creating new relations which informs the present of the writer. Wilson and Atwood did not devalue The Odyssey, they only interacted with it from a contemporary, feminist position.
