520		3	_aInformal areas in Egypt present a major urban challenge, as previous development projects have failed to meet residents' needs or ensure sustainability. This research proposes revising sustainable urban development principles, especially for informal areas. It integrates urban development principles and checklists, considering informal areas' unique conditions and using system thinking and urban nexus approaches. The identified principles cover economic, social, environmental, quality of life, and maintenance aspects. Experts verified these through surveys and statistical analysis. The study then developed a 137-indicator benchmark to measure and evaluate informal area sustainability. Finally, the research demonstrates how a parametric modeling tool can apply these sustainable development principles to analyze an informal area, assess its sustainability performance, and generate optimized solutions. This provides a framework to guide decision-makers in developing informal areas more sustainably.
