520		3	_aThe study seeks to evaluate the impact of the complex interplay between civic and ethnic elements of nationalism within the EU identity on the EU response towards secession of sub-state nations. The study discusses this impact at two different levels: the level of the EU institutions and the sub-state level, focusing on the secessionist movements, namely the cases of Catalonia and Scotland. At the institutional level, the dissertation examines the impact of the interplay between civic and ethnic elements of nationalism within the EU identity represented by the EU institutions on the EU reaction towards Catalonia and Scotland. At the sub-state level, the dissertation discusses the effect of the interplay between civic and ethnic elements of nationalism within the Catalan and Scottish identities on the EU response towards the secession of sub-state nations. The thesis concludes that the interplay between civic and ethnic elements of nationalism, whether at the EU institutional level or at the sub-state level, affects the EU response towards the secessionist cases of Catalonia and Scotland.
