520		3	_aThis study investigates the impact of freedom of information act (FOIA) in journalism practice and media governance in Nigeria. A quantitative research methodology was employed, utilizing a descriptive survey research design and purposive sampling technique. Structured questionnaires were administered to journalists from various media houses, and the data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the majority of journalists in Nigeria perceive FOIA positively, recognizing its value in accessing government-held information and prioritizing public interest in reporting. Approximately 65.7% of journalists utilize FOIA to a moderate or great extent, highlighting its role in facilitating access to government information and enabling investigative journalism. However, 57.2% of journalists identify hindrances to the effective utilization of FOIA, including bureaucratic red tape and lack of awareness about FOIA provisions. Despite these challenges, FOIA is seen as enhancing transparency, accountability, and responsible reporting among journalists. It contributes to media independence, credibility, and public trust in journalism by promoting access to diverse sources of information and fostering government accountability. Journalists prioritize responsible reporting when using information obtained through FOIA, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and adherence to professional ethics. Addressing the identified hindrances is crucial for maximizing the potential of FOIA in promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria's media landscape. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of media regulations, particularly FOIA, in shaping journalistic practices and fostering a more transparent and accountable government-media relationship in the digital age.
