520		3	_aAim: To evaluate the caries preventive effect of bioactive Giomer based gel during orthodontic treatment in comparison to fluoride gel using two means of caries detection. Materials and methods: A total number of 330 teeth corresponding to 16 patients assigned to orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances were randomly allocated into two equal groups (n=165 teeth). Group 1 (intervention group) was given Giomer based gel while Group 2 (control group) received Fluoride gel (sodium fluoride 2%). At each recall visit, the caries preventive efficacy of both materials was evaluated by careful teeth examination using two methods of caries detection: The laser-based fluorescence device DIAGNOdent and visual examination in accordance with the International Caries Detection and Assessment System ICDAS II. Results: Intergroup comparison showed no significant difference between both materials in terms of caries prevention along different follow-up periods. Intragroup comparison within Pro-care gel has shown a statistically significant increase in DIAGNOdent readings with time (P < 0. 00001). Intragroup comparison within Fluoride group has shown a statistically significant increase in DIAGNOdent readings with time (P < 0. 00001). Similarly, when evaluated following ICDAS criteria, Intragroup comparison within both groups has shown statistically significant change in ICDAS-II scores with time (P < 0. 00001). Conclusion: Bioactive Giomer based gel (PRG PRO CARE GEL) is effective in reducing the incidence of white spot lesions in orthodontic patients and can be successfully used as a caries preventive aid in orthodontic patients.
