520 _aThis thesis proposes two novel optimization approaches for achieving the optimal design of 1D photonic crystals. The {uFB01}rst approach is based on minimax criterion where nominal values of designable parameters are varied to best satisfy design speci{uFB01}cations. The second approach is based on design centering criterion, in which the objective is to maximize the probability of satisfying design speci{uFB01}cations. Two practical examples are given to demonstrate {uFB02}exibility and e{uFB03}ciency of the approaches
