520 _aBackground: Left atrial dysfunction has emerged as new independent predictor of cerebrovascular stroke. We investigated the prevalence of left atrial and left atrial appendage dysfunction among patients with stroke and its correlation with stroke severity as assessed by National institute of health stroke scale (NIHSS) score. Methods: We evaluated the left atrial function by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and left atrial appendage dysfunction by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in patients admitted with first acute ischemic stroke and sinus rhythm. TTE was done in 103 patients and TEE was done in 96 patients. Patients were classified into 3 groups based on TOAST classification: group 1 included patients with small vessel infarction, group 2 included patients with large vessel infarction and group 3 included patients with embolic stroke of undetermined etiology(ESUS).Stroke severity was assessed by National institute of health stroke scale
