520 _aIntroduction Dentin hypersensitivity is a common dental problem The most accepted theory for dentin hypersensitivity known as the hydrodynamic theory. This theory explains that the exposure of open dentinal tubules to stimuli activating mechanoreceptors that elicit short sharp pain. Materials and methods: A total number of forty two patients received two customized intra-oral appliances. A dentin specimen was attached to the customized intra-oral appliance. Patients were divided into two groups according to the tooth paste used; calcium sodium phosphosilicate or hydroxyapatite containing tooth paste. They were subdivided into three subgroups according to the testing periods: 24 hour, six and eight weeks. Patients were recalled after each time interval to obtain the dentin specimen which was reexamined under the scanning electron microscope and analyzed for dentinal tubules occlusion. Results: Results of the image analysis revealed a statistical significant difference between hydroxyapatite and calcium sodium phosphosilicate containing tooth pastes regardless follow up periods at (P=0.013). And there was no statistical significant difference comparing different follow up periods regardless of the tooth paste used (P=0.135)
