| 520 | _aThe present study aims to investigate the aspects of impoliteness in the conflictual Egyptian and British parliamentary discourse in the 1990s. A number of studies have researched impoliteness in parliamentary discourse, though not in Arabic. This study is an attempt to determine the strategies of both positive and negative impoliteness used in both Egyptian Parliamentary Discourse and British Parliamentary Discourse, and the instances of mock politeness and off-record impoliteness that took place in both parliaments at that time. Written samples of previous Egyptian and British Parliamentary Question Times are derived from the official channels of both parliaments. Samples are qualitatively analyzed, following Culpeper 1996 model of impoliteness strategies along with its modifications in 2003 and 2015. The analysis reveals a significant difference between the occurrence of impoliteness events in the Egyptian parliament, and their occurrence in the British House. The findings suggest a requirement for formalizing the convention of speaking system in the Egyptian parliament, in which it aims at tackling more the (un)parliamentary language and behaviour, to ensure that parliamentarians maintain appropriate, productive communication among the walls of the Egyptian National Assembly | ||
