The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of PQQ loaded on coaxial nanofibers following spinal cord injury in adult female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 100). The animals were divided into five groups: control, sham, SCI, unloaded nanofibers, and nanofibers loaded with PQQ.SCI caused a significant increase in the levels of IL-1Ý, IL-6, TNF-Ü, NF-kB, NO, iNOS and MDA. On the other hand, the injury induced a significant decrease in the level of IL-10 and the SOD and CAT activities in injured spinal cord tissue. Treatment of rats post SCI with unloaded nanofibers improved most of the above mentioned biochemical parameters and shifted them toward the sham group values. The treatment of SCI rats with PQQ loaded on coaxial nanofibers ameliorated all the investigated biochemical parameters. PQQ induced a decrease in the levels of IL-1Ý, IL-6, TNF-Ü, NF-kB, NO, iNOS and MDA, while caused an increase in the level of IL-10 and the activities of SOD and CAT in injured spinal cord tissue. However, the present study provides new insight into the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative stress mechanisms of PQQ action, so further studies are required to clarify the role of PQQ loaded on coaxial nanofibers in SCI treatment
